This image began with a detailed woodcut of a cat. I then added an anatomical chart and used patterns and color overlays to age it. The cat skull is an actual photograph that has been masked with a soft edge to blend in.

For the egg above I started with a textured ellipse created in GroBoto 3D. I brought it into Photoshop and distorted it slightly for a more egg like shape. The chest was constructed using pieces from a photo of wood. Gradients were then applied.

Above I used a victorian iron work pattern for the ribbons. The bug was transformed from a book of old nature drawings, slightly distorted to fill the shape better. Different filters, layer effects and blend modes were used for depth and color.

For the horse I drew the outline using a photo for reference. I then filled it with gears, springs, bars and other mechanical looking pieces to make it appear to be a robot. Shading and layer effects were then added to complete the metallic look.

Walkies was created along with a series of others as desktop wallpaper to sell at a science fiction convention. The fire extinguisher, phone receiver, leash and the copper spring for the robot’s neck were taken from scanned photos, the equipment on the bench started as black and white victorian woodcut prints, everything else was created in Photoshop. The robot, dog and airship were each drawn with pen and marquee tools. The robot uses a scan of an actual piece of metal that has been warped into a cylindrical shape and then shaded with gradients. The dog was constructed using various filters and layer effects that were shaded with gradients. The airship was made with pattern overlays and textures and was shaded using layer masks and brushes. The background was a flat piece of riveted metal that has been warped and transformed to emulate perspective and curvature.
